Homemade Fruit Soda

Sounds simple enough but balancing the sweet with some sour really can make a difference.

  • Various fruit
  • Soda water
  • Sweetened lime juice or Agave syrup or Cucumber syrup (Monin)
  • Mint leaves
  • Absolut Cilantro (optional)
  1. Slice the fruit and put it in your container. It’s best not to include the peels of citrus or kiwis—they can impact the flavor. If you use grapefruit, I highly recommend also using a banana to smooth the grapefruit’s bitter aftertaste.
  2. Cover the fruit with ice and add mint.
  3. Pour a conservative amount of your sweetener and then nearly fill the container with soda water. You want to leave room if you need more sweetener.
  4. Save the cilantro vodka for after pouring into glasses to best adjust to taste and if you want to keep some alcohol free for the kids.

When ready to serve, if your container will allow, gently turn it upside down to evenly distribute the fruit juices. You will find that there’s a lot more fruit flavor after leaving it overnight.

NOTE: You can refill the container with additional soda water and sweetener as it gets low. I use the same container of fruit for about a week.

The Onion Slicer

Some people burn a candle or chew gum. This is the drink we’ve come up with for fending off those teary eyes while slicing onions.

  • 1 part Patrón Café
  • 1 part Grappa
  • 1 part Amaretto

Take a good swig before slicing and sip as you go. It works well and makes cooking a little less stressful :)
